EVENTS: Water pollution from microplastics in textiles and the development of science in the production and placement of filters

As part of the MISSION4WATER project, a lecture on Water Pollution from Microplastics in Textiles and the Development of Science in the Production and Placement of Filters was held on February 24, 2025, with the participation of 22 students from “Tirana Jonë” School. Organized by Foundation Milieukontakt Albania, one of the project partners in the consortium, the session aimed to raise awareness about microplastic pollution caused by washing synthetic textiles and introduce students to the latest advancements in filtration technologies designed to reduce their release into water systems. The presentation covered the environmental impact of microplastics, their presence in everyday life, and the scientific efforts being made to address this issue.
Following the lecture, students engaged in small group discussions, reflecting on the topic and exploring potential solutions. They expressed interest in alternatives to synthetic fabrics and the importance of raising awareness about filtration systems that can help reduce pollution at the household level. One student noted, “I had no idea that our clothes release microplastics every time we wash them. This makes me think differently about the fabrics I buy.” Another added, “It’s impressive that scientists are working on special filters to stop microplastics from entering the environment. We should have more awareness about this in our daily lives.”
This interactive session not only informed students about the challenges of microplastic pollution but also encouraged them to think critically about sustainable solutions. By engaging young minds in discussions on science, technology, and environmental responsibility, the event contributed to the broader goals of MISSION4WATER—fostering awareness and inspiring future action for cleaner water systems.
